Blueberry Coffee Smoothie Details

Level of Difficulty: Super Simple! This smoothie is about as easy a homemade breakfast comes. Add all ingredients to a blender, blend for a minute and your Blueberry Coffee Smoothie is ready for consumption!

Flavor: This smoothie has a sweet flavor. The blueberries really shine through and compliment the coffee. The banana flavor is very subtle and is used to add a smooth texture to the drink.

Time: 5 minutes! This includes time to get all of your ingredients out, add to the blender and blend away! Just make sure you freeze your coffee and banana the night before.

Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Frozen Coffee: Pour leftover coffee directly into an ice cube tray and freeze. These cubes will be added directly to the blender in place of ice.
  • Frozen Banana: The frozen banana gives the smoothie a smooth texture and adds natural sweetness to the drink. If you do not have a frozen banana, substitute your most ripe banana (you may have to add some extra ice cubes).
  • Frozen Blueberries: Find frozen blueberries in the freezer section at your local grocery store or freeze fresh blueberries. You can substitute fresh blueberries here but may need to add extra ice to the smoothie.
  • Milk: I prefer Almond Milk in my smoothies. Use whatever milk you enjoy and have on hand.
  • Quick Cooking Oats: Substitute any unsweetened oatmeal (uncooked) that you have.
  • Pinch of Cinnamon: Omit if you do not have cinnamon or substitute with a pinch of Pumpkin Pie Spice.

Let's get blending!

  1. Gather your ingredients. Remember to freeze your coffee in ice cube trays the night before. This will allow you to easily pop out a few cubes and add directly to the blender. Freeze your banana as well! I like to freeze ripe (almost black) bananas in either a plastic bag or plastic wrap so that I can easily add to smoothies.
  2. Add all ingredients to a blender. Blend on high for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  3. Pour into a large glass. Enjoy immediately!

FAQ

Why add oatmeal to a smoothie? By adding uncooked oatmeal to a smoothie, you are giving the smoothie more heartiness to keep you full longer. You are also adding fiber to your drink. The oatmeal does give the smoothie a grittier texture.

How can I make my smoothie sweeter? In order to make your smoothie sweeter, use a whole banana instead of half of a banana. You could also add maple syrup or honey.

What kind of coffee should I use in my Blueberry Coffee Smoothie? I like to use the Bethany Beach Roast or the Cape May Roast from Coffee Rendezbrew. The Cape May Roast has sweet notes of french vanilla and crème brûlée. The Bethany Beast Roast has infused flavors of blueberries, cream and cobbler. Both coffee roasts are delicious in this Blueberry Coffee Smoothie!

Can I use fresh blueberries instead of frozen blueberries? Yes, you can use fresh blueberries instead of frozen blueberries in this smoothie. I prefer using frozen blueberries because they act as sweet ice cubes in the drink.

Can I make this a protein smoothie? You can absolutely make this a protein smoothie. Simply add in a scoop of your favorite protein powder and blend! Vanilla protein powder is delicious with the blueberries.

Additional Add-Ins

Here are some ideas to make this delicious smoothie even better!

  • Flax Seeds: Adding flax seed to your smoothie adds in essential nutrients and vitamins to your breakfast drink with little impact on the taste. I recommend adding a tablespoon to start.
  • Chia Seeds: Just like flax seeds, chia seeds will add an extra nutrient boost to your smoothie while keeping the sweet blueberry taste.
  • Additional Berries: Add in extra berries such as strawberries or raspberries. Choose berries that will compliment the coffee flavor you choose.
  • Honey or Maple Syrup: If you like a sweeter smoothie, use honey or maple syrup for natural sweeteners.
  • Whipped Cream: Top your smoothie with whipped cream and extra blueberries for a little decadence!

Expert Tips

  • Freeze coffee and banana ahead of time! By doing this, you are reducing waste (not throwing the coffee and the old banana away). You are also prepping for a delicious smoothie.
  • If your smoothie is too thick, add more coffee ice cubes, milk or water. The size of bananas can differ as well as the thickness of the oats. This can cause the smoothie to need more liquid. Keep in mind, more coffee ice cubes equals more caffeine.
  • If your smoothie is too thin, add more blueberries, oats or banana! These non-liquid ingredients will help to soak up some of the liquid.
